ANIMAL ADVOCACY & PIGLET'S RESCUE FUND

Piglet was rescued from a hoarding situation in Georgia when he was a newborn puppy. While Piglet was fortunate to have found a devoted loving family, there are many dogs like him still looking for their forever homes. Through our social media pages, Piglet has become an ambassador for disabled rescued animals.

Our advocacy efforts and Piglet's Rescue Fund were set up to:

  • Educate about and advocate for rescued animals through our social media pages, Piglet Mindset® educational program, as well as webinars on a number of veterinary topics

  • Encourage spay and neuter of dogs and cats in light of the pet overpopulation problem

  • Motivate individuals to adopt rescued pets, especially those who are disabled

  • Provide funding to rescue organizations that focus on disabled dogs and other animals

  • Support for The Disabled Pets Project, a comprehensive resource for veterinarians, pet parents, and rescuers who care for disabled pets. The website is disabledpets.org

  • The fund is supported by direct donations as well as a portion of all Piglet merchandise sales.

PIGLET AND GEORGIE'S KINDNESS CLUB

Piglet and Georgie's Kindness Club has been created to encourage children to bring Kindness Campaigns to their communities. Examples of Kindness activities include running a food drive and delivering the food to local food pantries, or raising awareness for animal rescues by collecting dog and cat food and other supplies for their local animal shelters and rescue organizations. Some children might be interested in organizing book drives where they raise funds and support so they can purchase and donate books to head start programs, community day cares, school libraries, and individual children.

There are so many ways to bring kindness into the community.

We hope Piglet and Georgie's Kindness Club will motivate everyone to remember to be kind!

Vet Tips Tuesday Deanie is 14 1/2. He's been havi Vet Tips Tuesday

Deanie is 14 1/2. He's been having way more bad days than good days re his mobility. He's eating and aware but he hasn't been able to get up and walk much for the past week. His harness has been a big help in supporting him as he moves around.

Sunday morning was pretty rough. He could hardly stand up but insisted on slipping around on our deck floor when we were doing Father's Day. He eventually went inside for a nap.

Then by the evening, he ran out the door with the other dogs, raced around the yard, and "flew" up the stairs to wish his dad a happy dad's day.

Yesterday we checked his bloodwork to see if anything new was contributing to his decline. Thankfully, it was totally normal which is great news. He even relaxed for his laser therapy.

We're switching out his antiinflammatory med to see if we can get a better response from a new one. Sometimes one med will work better than another for individual dogs, especially after they've been taking one for a long time.

Do your older dogs have ups and downs like Deanie?

Happy Father's Day to Piglet's Favorite Dad! It Happy Father's Day to Piglet's Favorite Dad!

It took about 30 seconds for the tiny one pound 7 week old deaf blind pink puppy to attach his deepest love to Warren Shapiro, his then foster dad.

Eight years later, getting to witness Piglet's devotion to his Favorite Dad is the most heartwarming part of my every day. It is pure and sweet.

Happy Father's Day to all of our dads!

The great irony. I put soft waterproof blankets al The great irony. I put soft waterproof blankets all over the couch, just in case. What does Piggy do?

He digs his nest, moving the blankets away so he can lay directly ON the couch.

We love him so much that it's really ok, but we'd rather that he sleep on the blankets.

The little dark line on the couch when I picked Piglet up is just a piece of thread. Nothing to worry about.

Senior Saturday Vet Tip: As a house call vet, goo Senior Saturday Vet Tip:

As a house call vet, good footing is the number one issue I see for my old dog patients. Visiting their homes, I see them basically ice skating across kitchen and living room floors, sliding down wood stairs, and eventually I get the predicted call from my clients that their dogs are down on a slippery floor and can't get up.

I warn my clients that if they allow their dogs on wood floors, eventually they will come home to find their dog literally swimming and sliding around in a pool of urine, unable to get up. It is horrifying, painful, exhausting, and undignified for the dog to be in this situation waiting for their people to arrive home to get them up and cleaned up.

My dog Dean has been able to get in and out of the kitchen without a mat until this last week. We have a gate to keep him out when we aren't home. We will be getting mats for that floor to avoid the scene in this video or even worse.

With help I thought Dean could walk out but he was still@sliding so I picked him up. He's only 35 pounds. If he was an 85 pound lab, I wouldn't be able to help him myself.

Good footing is important for safety, comfort, and confidence in moving around for older dogs and cats too. Big dogs have the hardest time but small dogs and cats also develop old age arthritis.

They don't have to have severe mobility issues yet to benefit from early intervention. It's cheap and easy to put mats and carpeting down on the floor. It might not be pretty but just do it anyway!

My tiny deafblind pink dog Piglet doesn't do well My tiny deafblind pink dog Piglet doesn't do well when he gets left home. It's not like he's all alone, but in his mind, he should be on the road with his mom all the time.

He can tell the difference when I'm running around cleaning up vs walking out the door! It is heartbreaking to leave him bc he cries and gets so worked up. But there are a few places I go that he is not welcome, even though he will stay quiet and sleep in his little carrier bag. He came with me to the dentist on Wed but had to stay home for the PT appt yesterday.

Thankfully he recovers quickly when I get home. He was so happy that he removed my guilt with the most adorable happy dance, rolling in bird poop in the grass, and taking a long fresh air walk in his stroller.

All is well. He forgives and moves on.🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷

They called me crazy. A veterinarian colleague tol They called me crazy. A veterinarian colleague told me I needed my head examined. A breeder said "we cull dogs like that bc they don't have a good quality of life!"

It was very insulting and shocking to hear friends and professionals talking like this about my tiny deaf blind pink foster puppy who I was madly in love with and struggling with whether or not to adopt.

Thankfully I'm not one to take these types of attitudes and comments personally. I forgive everyone who spewed negativity at me and my husband about our little dog Piglet. And that is bc all but one, the breeder, changed their tune when they observed and realized just how amazing my dog Piglet is and that his life has meaning that most people and dogs never achieve.

There's no competition. But let's face it, deafblind dogs and other disabled animals can and do live amazing high quality lives that might look different but are equally valued by their people and themselves. And there are many doubters!

My dog Piglet and now deafblind Baby Georgie are ambassadors for disabled pets. We use their platforms to entertain of course, bc they are adorable funny little guys. But their message to adults and children isn't subtle. They are inspiring bc their resilience and determination are unmatched. They are tiny 6 pound dogs who are full of life and charisma!

Our nonprofit Piglet International Inc supports our Piglet Mindset Ed Program which teaches kids to be positive, compassionate, and kind. The kids we meet don't call Piglet names other than brave, strong, determined... They internalize his message AND many plan to and will adopt disabled dogs at some point in their lives. We've got that whole kindness thing covered- being kind to oneself, other people, and animals too! The website is pigletmindset.org.

Our new Disabled Pets Project was created in response to the need for support from and for vets, pet parents, and rescuers who care for and about disabled pets. All bc of a tiny pink dog who was misunderstood in the beginning! The website is disabledpets.org.

Enjoy this collection of Piglet pics and videos for throwback Thursday.🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷
