ANIMAL ADVOCACY & PIGLET'S RESCUE FUND

Piglet was rescued from a hoarding situation in Georgia when he was a newborn puppy. While Piglet was fortunate to have found a devoted loving family, there are many dogs like him still looking for their forever homes. Through our social media pages, Piglet has become an ambassador for disabled rescued animals.

Our advocacy efforts and Piglet's Rescue Fund were set up to:

  • Educate about and advocate for rescued animals through our social media pages, Piglet Mindset® educational program, as well as webinars on a number of veterinary topics

  • Encourage spay and neuter of dogs and cats in light of the pet overpopulation problem

  • Motivate individuals to adopt rescued pets, especially those who are disabled

  • Provide funding to rescue organizations that focus on disabled dogs and other animals

  • Support for The Disabled Pets Project, a comprehensive resource for veterinarians, pet parents, and rescuers who care for disabled pets. The website is disabledpets.org

  • The fund is supported by direct donations as well as a portion of all Piglet merchandise sales.

PIGLET AND GEORGIE'S KINDNESS CLUB

Piglet and Georgie's Kindness Club has been created to encourage children to bring Kindness Campaigns to their communities. Examples of Kindness activities include running a food drive and delivering the food to local food pantries, or raising awareness for animal rescues by collecting dog and cat food and other supplies for their local animal shelters and rescue organizations. Some children might be interested in organizing book drives where they raise funds and support so they can purchase and donate books to head start programs, community day cares, school libraries, and individual children.

There are so many ways to bring kindness into the community.

We hope Piglet and Georgie's Kindness Club will motivate everyone to remember to be kind!

Communicating with a diverse group of disabled dog Communicating with a diverse group of disabled dogs, in this case deaf and deaf blind dogs, is fun and rewarding. It might seem like a difficult challenge to teach deaf and blind dogs but the reality is that they are no different than any other dogs. We just use different cues to communicate what we are saying to them.

Here are some examples of the differences in the way we communicate with our deaf, deaf blind, and hearing and sighted dogs.

Summary- hearing and sighted dogs- verbal and hand signals. Deaf dogs- hand signals. Deaf blind dogs- tap@and touch signals. Older dogs who become deaf and or blind need extra patience and understanding as they learn to accept new ways of communication with their people. This is a topic for another post.

It's really adorable when one of these herding dog It's really adorable when one of these herding dog noses taps your hand for "touch" but it is also a very important way for dogs to check in and connect with their person.

I can't get over the resemblance of our new Baby Betty to our Beautiful Gina.

Spend a little time with Deaf Puppy Betty B White. Spend a little time with Deaf Puppy Betty B White.
Her energy level can be overwhelming at times. But her enthusiasm for everything she does is inspiring as well.

She's gained a pound and a half in 2 weeks. Shes about 14 weeks now.
Anyone want to guess what her adult weight will be?

I posted this picture of Deanie last night on Face I posted this picture of Deanie last night on Facebook. I gave the update below.

One of the comments was a very sincere recommendation that it is his time to go.

What?

Here's the update I posted. Does this fit your criteria for deciding on end of life services for your dog? It doesn't for me bc Deanie is still living a very peaceful life, enjoying his dog sibs, his very slow walks, and his life as a senior dog. He is supported with meds, supplements, a harness, ramp... his skin is clean, no pressure sores. I know the time will come but it isn't right now.

Dean is 14 1/2, has progressing mobility I issues due to arthritis and probably some spinal cord degeneration.

He's having more trouble walking but still gets his short walk in every night. He sleeps in till 11 and barely eats breakfast but he eats his full meal at night.

He's a good boy.🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷

Separation anxiety in dogs and puppies is real. So Separation anxiety in dogs and puppies is real. Some are more severe than others. Some dogs respond very well to having a good friend to support them.

Of all the dogs in our current pack, after 3 1/2 years, little Lucy Lemonade still struggles with being left home even with her sister and brother dogs.

New deaf puppy Betty is a classic severe case of separation anxiety. We are trying everything to mitigate her reaction to being left on our kitchen even for 5 seconds.

This happened this morning while I left the kitchen to feed my birds. It was so sweet to see the other dogs resting with her.

Teaching Betty B White "Look" The Look is so imp Teaching
Betty B White "Look"

The Look is so important for all dogs to make eye contact with their person. It's good for bonding and communication.

Teaching a deaf dog Look is especially useful in keeping their attention. They need to learn to check in with their person.

Guess who's doing really well with her "Look"?

Not shown is the signal for "good dog" which is a thumbs up to signal that she's doing what she's been asked, in this case, looking into my eyes.
