ANIMAL ADVOCACY & PIGLET'S RESCUE FUND

Piglet was rescued from a hoarding situation in Georgia when he was a newborn puppy. While Piglet was fortunate to have found a devoted loving family, there are many dogs like him still looking for their forever homes. Through our social media pages, Piglet has become an ambassador for disabled rescued animals.

Our advocacy efforts and Piglet's Rescue Fund were set up to:

  • Educate about and advocate for rescued animals through our social media pages, Piglet Mindset® educational program, as well as webinars on a number of veterinary topics

  • Encourage spay and neuter of dogs and cats in light of the pet overpopulation problem

  • Motivate individuals to adopt rescued pets, especially those who are disabled

  • Provide funding to rescue organizations that focus on disabled dogs and other animals

  • Support for The Disabled Pets Project, a comprehensive resource for veterinarians, pet parents, and rescuers who care for disabled pets. The website is disabledpets.org

  • The fund is supported by direct donations as well as a portion of all Piglet merchandise sales.

PIGLET AND GEORGIE'S KINDNESS CLUB

Piglet and Georgie's Kindness Club has been created to encourage children to bring Kindness Campaigns to their communities. Examples of Kindness activities include running a food drive and delivering the food to local food pantries, or raising awareness for animal rescues by collecting dog and cat food and other supplies for their local animal shelters and rescue organizations. Some children might be interested in organizing book drives where they raise funds and support so they can purchase and donate books to head start programs, community day cares, school libraries, and individual children.

There are so many ways to bring kindness into the community.

We hope Piglet and Georgie's Kindness Club will motivate everyone to remember to be kind!

Some routines are just worth the commitment and th Some routines are just worth the commitment and this is one. I'm so lucky to be the one to care for Piglet, the deaf blind pink puppy.

Can you even imagine giving Piglet a kiss after putting his shirt on and having him do his twisty, every morning?

I can say that it is a highlight of my day!

Piglet, the deaf blind pink puppy accepts his challenges straight on and that is what makes him an inspirational force for children and adults around the world!

Two days ago we brought our sweet deaf Aussie pupp Two days ago we brought our sweet deaf Aussie puppy, Baby B, to my rescue friend Trisha at Perfect Imperfections Rescue in CT.

It was a very hard decision, full of emotion, guilt, and doubt. But after just 24 hours, the dogs confirmed what my heart already knew. Moving B was both healthy and necessary.

B is now in a place where she can be herself. She has compatible friends. She doesn’t become frantic when her new foster mom leaves the room. She’s adjusting and enjoying her new life. While I know she must wonder what happened to us, dogs move forward. Her time with us was a bridge from her initial rescue to something even better.

The change at home has been profound. The tension dropped immediately:

•
Piglet came into the kitchen at night for his bedtime cookie for the first time in 9 weeks.

•
Annie stopped hiding upstairs and came outside with the other dogs. She no longer eats alone behind a closed door.

•
The little ones curled up together in their cocoon dog beds again.

Last night, I watched them relax into their old routine. For me, it was bittersweet. For them, it was relief and the clearest confirmation that there had been too much compromise for all.

This morning, Piglet gave me one more sign. After weeks of leaving my side at night, he finally slept peacefully snuggled up against me, just like he has for the past 8 ½ years.

My own stress had reached a breaking point, even showing up as a heart arrhythmia two weeks ago. I’m sure the dogs felt my anxiety even when I wasn’t aware of it. No matter how much I tried, nothing ever fit naturally for B or for my other dogs.

Now, we are all in a better place thanks to the kindness of my rescue friends at Perfect Imperfections in CT and Pawsavers in Ohio.

To those who sent supportive messages, thank you. To the few who criticized this decision, I hope you’ll reconsider. Doing what’s best for all the dogs must always come first.

This is a post I’ve been nervous to share… but This is a post I’ve been nervous to share… but I know many of you care deeply about Betty and deserve to know where her journey has taken her.

At the end of a presentation to vet students about disabled pets, someone asked me:
“What do you tell clients who want to adopt a disabled pet?”

I gave my usual answer: prioritize the match.

But this time, I also shared my very personal experience with my own sweet puppy, Betty White.

Many of you know that while we absolutely love our double merle deaf puppy, it has been extremely challenging to meet her breed-related energy and instincts. Our little dogs are simply too small, too old, and too disabled to handle her high-energy, nonstop play style. For their safety, Betty has been living in our small gated kitchen, separated from the pack.

For 9 weeks, I’ve spent hours every day playing with her outside, doing training, taking walks, and sitting with her. Despite all of this, her frustration and anxiety have only grown. She desperately needs larger dogs to run and play with, and a family dynamic that fits her unique needs.

Today we brought Betty to a dear rescue friend of mine at Perfect Imperfections Rescue, who specializes in deaf and blind double merles. Her home and pack are perfectly suited to a dog like Betty. Baby B is safe, loved, and getting the best care.

We are, of course, heartbroken. But we know this is best for her and for our other dogs. We’ll see where her journey takes her next, but for now, our hope is that she can finally decompress and enjoy being the wild, joyful girl she was meant to be.

Adopting any pet — disabled or not — means thinking carefully about your lifestyle, other pets, family, work, finances, and home environment. It’s so easy to fall in love at first sight, but the right match is what makes it work for everyone.

Communication with Deaf, Deafblind, and those that can hear happens in different but equally effective ways. Here's how we do it!

I never intentionally show my dogs doing their pee bc I try to be respectful of their dignity. But in this case, it seemed fitting.

This video shows the end result of teaching each group. Would you like to see how we teach them? Let us know in the comments. Maybe we'll do some instructional videos.
