ANIMAL ADVOCACY & PIGLET'S RESCUE FUND

Piglet was rescued from a hoarding situation in Georgia when he was a newborn puppy. While Piglet was fortunate to have found a devoted loving family, there are many dogs like him still looking for their forever homes. Through our social media pages, Piglet has become an ambassador for disabled rescued animals.

Our advocacy efforts and Piglet's Rescue Fund were set up to:

  • Educate about and advocate for rescued animals through our social media pages, Piglet Mindset® educational program, as well as webinars on a number of veterinary topics

  • Encourage spay and neuter of dogs and cats in light of the pet overpopulation problem

  • Motivate individuals to adopt rescued pets, especially those who are disabled

  • Provide funding to rescue organizations that focus on disabled dogs and other animals

  • Support for The Disabled Pets Project, a comprehensive resource for veterinarians, pet parents, and rescuers who care for disabled pets. The website is disabledpets.org

  • The fund is supported by direct donations as well as a portion of all Piglet merchandise sales.

PIGLET AND GEORGIE'S KINDNESS CLUB

Piglet and Georgie's Kindness Club has been created to encourage children to bring Kindness Campaigns to their communities. Examples of Kindness activities include running a food drive and delivering the food to local food pantries, or raising awareness for animal rescues by collecting dog and cat food and other supplies for their local animal shelters and rescue organizations. Some children might be interested in organizing book drives where they raise funds and support so they can purchase and donate books to head start programs, community day cares, school libraries, and individual children.

There are so many ways to bring kindness into the community.

We hope Piglet and Georgie's Kindness Club will motivate everyone to remember to be kind!

Vet Tips Tuesday This is my dog Gina the night bef Vet Tips Tuesday
This is my dog Gina the night before I gave her the gift of a peaceful forever sleep. She was so so sick yet she held her head high, insisted on coming with me in my car, and just didn't look the end of life part. Her hair was clean and soft. She wasn't emaciated, and she wasn't lying in a pool of excrement.

I knew it was time bc when I looked closely and dug down deep, I couldn't deny that she was suffering. She hid it well. It definitely would have been an easier decision to make if she was grimy, smelly, and crying out in misery. But I never would have waited that long.

I am a house call vet. I go to people's houses to help their pets leave them peacefully. I have seen the full spectrum of what I deem to be waiting too long to deciding to end way before I would.

One of the toughest cases is big dogs that are unable to walk despite full treatment and care. They are still engaged, eating, and "full of life". But their mobility is at its end. They look good overall.

I'm glad I have videos and pictures of Gina during her final decline. They keep my brain from wandering into the field of guilt that is so natural for all of us to visit after making euthanasia decisions for our pets.

Share your experiences about your difficult end of life decisions for your pets.

There is no sneaking around my tiny deafblind pink There is no sneaking around my tiny deafblind pink dog Piglet. He might look like he's sleeping but his nose is always working.

Somehow this awesome little disabled dog can differentiate when I'm walking around the house doing laundry vs leaving the house to take a walk.

I think he has ESP!

There's no alone time when Piglet, the deaf blind There's no alone time when Piglet, the deaf blind pink puppy is in town. But the trade off is well worth the compromise.

Giving this tiny pink dog a massage is probably more relaxing for me than it is for him. And the head tuck is another gift to behold.

Have a good night.🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷🐾🩷

Seriously, if I could do it all over again, this w Seriously, if I could do it all over again, this would be the picture I would put on the cover of my book.

This is my deafblind pink dog Piglet. This is his most expressive, inquisitive, adorable "look". This is what his precious pink nose, floppy ears, and tilted little head look like when he is posing like only Piglet can do. It is the ultimate cute that I literally can't stop looking at.

I truly believe that a picture like this would have sold exponentially more books. It's not that the original cover picture is bad. It's just not nearly as cute as this one. Of course, I didn't have this picture in 2021.

Thankfully, the book has reached a very large number of people around the world. I know they've enjoyed it bc MANY readers (and listeners) have told me.

I'm hoping there will be a new Piglet Georgie book sometime in the future. That book will have a cover that shines with the amazing personalities and cuteness of my two amazing deafblind boys.

Have you read my memoir called Piglet, the unexpected story of a deaf blind pink puppy and his family?

Would you buy a book with this picture on the cover?

Introducing our little girls Evie and Zoey. Evie Introducing our little girls Evie and Zoey.

Evie- 13 years old, dumped at a shelter, in a box, when the shelter was closed. Schnauzer poodle mix. Adorable sweet. Loves kids. Loves to visit schools. Works the room on her own! Can't believe she's ours.

Zoey- 10 1/2 years old. Posted on Craig's list in AR with 5 littermates. Had severe case of parvo as a baby. Chihuahua yorkie mix. Bossy, smart, listens, dog reactive crazy girl. 6 1/2 pounds of feisty lap dog cuteness.

These two are always together but they are not soulmates. They are good friends but mostly they love their mom. I am their common interest along with the cookies, blueberries, and other treats that they get when they sit together looking so adorable.

I'm already panicking as Evie is losing stamina and her hearing. And Zoey has cataracts. I'm not sure how I'm going to manage these two as seniors. I guess they already are and I'm not managing too well.🩷

Are your dogs friends?

Tonight's goodnight video is paired with the cutes Tonight's goodnight video is paired with the cutest wakeup ever!

A student asked if we have trouble getting our Deafblind dog Piglet to go to sleep. Maybe bc he's blind it would be hard for him to differentiate between night and day?

Reality- Piglet loves to sleep all snuggled up. Getting him up in the morning is a bigger challenge than getting him to sleep at night!

Melissa Shapiro, veterinarian and mom to 7 rescued Melissa Shapiro, veterinarian and mom to 7 rescued dogs. My house call practice has been focused on senior pets and end of life care for decades. So I've seen the whole range of client approaches to their senior pets. Most people prioritize quality of life and pain management in older arthritic dogs who don't have other major medical issues.

Quality of life for arthritic dogs is relative and sometimes controversial. Some people are happy to do a combination of meds, supplements, laser, and acupuncture treatments. Others refuse to use meds bc they think they'll cause harm to their dogs who are clearly in pain and unable to walk. Two sides of the spectrum of care. Right?

Some people line their floors with yoga mats and install ramps, and use slings and harnesses to help their dogs get around. Others say they care but refuse to put a mat on the floor as their old dog slips and slides and falls splayed legged, sometimes in a pool of urine which is horrifying.

Some request euthanasia before trying any meds or supplements bc their dog is "too old" and others stretch things out probably way too long!

Each senior dog is an individual and should be treated accordingly. We should strive for a good quality of life with the understanding that good isn't the same for a senior as it is for a young energetic healthy dog.

My dog Deanie seems to have a good balance right now and his adorable gray face and burst of energy on this video says it all!

I just woke up from the absolute worst nightmare! I just woke up from the absolute worst nightmare! I LOST Piglet and could not find him. I was away and had him at a park. I turned around and in a second he was gone.

He is microchipped but he was not wearing a collar with an ID tag on. I searched all over, following leads to dogs that sort of looked like him. But NO Piglet.

He has a collar with an ID tag. So does Georgie. But unlike my other dogs who wear collars with ID tags that have our phone numbers on them, these guys have very sensitive skin on their necks. So they don't usually wear collars. Plus Georgie chews his collar and tags.

All the dogs are microchipped but that doesn't get them back to their people too quickly if they are lost or stolen. A tag with a phone number is a quick direct link for anyone who finds a dog.

From here on, when we are out, guess who will be wearing collars with tags?

PS- Out dogs are never out of sight and always on leashes but even then, anything is possible!
